Bill said that Sunday was the biggest day ever at Pig Out and estimates this year’s six-day attendance at around 90,000 people.
The Lucinda Williams concert Sunday night drew 6,000 people and Burke said she was raving about how great the crowd was as this was the first time she’s come to Spokane. Bill says Pig Out has become more of a food and music festival than just a food event.
On the other hand there’s this big statistic for Pig Out: By Monday night around 195,000 servings of food will be sold.
That’s roughly two servings of food for every person who visited or, as you can see below in Mark Peterson’s case, that would be more than 40 servings of food for ONE PERSON.
Of course we can’t forget that it was two years ago that former KXLY 4 Reporter Karina Shagren attempted to accomplish the same feat as you can see in this video that Karina would probably rather you not see.
Today I started my “30 in 30″ challenge bright and early at 5 a.m. inside Oz Fitness on the Northside. If you didn’t catch it, Good Morning NW did a live remote from inside the facility each half hour starting at 5. It was nice to have someone there for support and to help start the morning off right!
The swim went by pretty fast, just 15 minutes but the stationary bike will take some getting used to. There’s nothing like riding out on the open road with your own bike. The run was comfortable, only 30 minutes, I took my time so I could do a live interview with Kjerstin Ramsing for the 6:30 half hour. A number of members were naturally curious as to why there was a KXLY4 news camera inside the gym at such an early hour and curious as to why I was being interviewed. I was happy to share the fundraising/fitness challenge with them. A few said they’d join the challenge by doing “30 minutes of exercise a day for 30 days”, afterall, they already workout a few times a week anyway.
And here’s some great news, already we’ve raised over $2,000! Of course our goal is $30,000 in 30 days. So, thank you to those who have already made a donation and to those that are sponsoring someone else and their personal challenge. Again, you can go to www.cancerpatientcare.org to donate anytime. Together we can help so many low-income Cancer Patients and their families in the Inland NW deal with Cancer.
I am scheduled to be off today, so I’ll be including pictures from my first day and your daily fitness and nutrition tip first thing tomorrow. Have a wonderful Labor Day and just keep livin’.
I’m a horrible golfer. While I make strides in my game every year, overall, golfing and I still have a long way to go. Lucky for me, I play golf with people who allow multiple mulligans (do-overs, for you non-golfers). As I was watching the hurricane coverage this weekend, I couldn’t help but think: Hurricane Gustav is America’s mulligan.
It’s strange enough to see this major hurricane hit exactly three years after Hurricane Katrina. I can’t imagine anyone in the Gulf Coast region actually looks forward to Labor Day. Still, you could see it as early as Saturday morning: the people in that region learned their lesson from Katrina. The fact that an estimated 95% of people evacuated the city of New Orleans is an amazing feat, especially considering how many people stayed behind last time. But, the people of New Orleans aren’t the only people who needed to learn the tough lessons from Katrina. The people who really had a lesson to learn are the local, state and federal politicians, who helped create the debacle that was Katrina. This is their chance to get it right and, so far, it looks like they’ve put what they learned from that storm into action.
The only problem with a mulligan is that, while it may change the number on your score card, it doesn’t actually change the way you played. So, even if things with Gustav go in a positive direction, you can’t erase the 1,800 deaths from Katrina.
It is a BEAUTIFUL Labor Day weekend in the Inland Northwest. I’m sitting here in the sun, on my back deck. As I track Hurricane Gustav (and check football scores) from my laptop in a lawnchair, I am very happy to be 2-thousand miles from the Gulf Coast. The predictions are grim for folks in the western and central Gulf Coast region, as hurricane Gustav is now a major hurricane, and its projected path still takes it right over New Orleans. If you’re interested in hurricane tracking too, I’ve found the very best source of information on hurricanes is the National Hurricane Center. Here, you can find the very latest advisories, forecasts, and lots of information about hurricanes. Let’s all hope for the best as Gustav makes landfall later this holiday weekend.
I’m very excited to tell you about my “30 in 30″ fitness / fund raising challenge that kicks off on September 1st. This afternoon, I spoke to the kids at the Boys and Girls Club at 544 E. Providence in Spokane.
Many of them are joining my challenge to perform “30 minutes of exercise a day for 30 days” starting on Labor Day (9/1). We’ll be awarding prizes to the kids who raise the most money and complete the most days of exercise for the month of September.
The charity we’re focusing on is Cancer Patient Care. Its website has information on how you can donate to my month-long fund raising effort. For my part, I’ll be doing 30 spring triathlons during this same period. Our goal is to raise $30,000. It’s a lofty effort but something I believe we can reach together.
I’ll continue to give you updates right here on my blog as well as mentions during KXLY4 HD News at 5. Thanks for supporting Cancer Patient Care.
