Headlines of History

Published by Melissa Luck at 12:36 pm under Beyond the Headlines

As I confessed on our live blog last night, I’m a bit of a news nerd. I spent a good portion of my night last night on newspaper websites from across the country, looking for their headlines on this historic occasion. If you’re interested in doing the same, I found a way to save you the time. Check out this link to the Newseum’s website - featuring more than 400 headlines from around the world.

Great link! Have you ever come across a link to historic front pages? It would be pretty cool to be able to go back and read the headlines on particular days in history … say the day following the stock market crash that led to the great depression …

You can link to these and buy them now apparently. I saw the display at the Newseum last Saturday.

I found a paper in an antique shop a few years ago. It was the New York Times from July 2nd, 1863. The big story was that Grant almost had Vicksburg ready to surrender and the city was asking terms. An interesting note mid way through the front page had reports that were unconfirmed of fighting between Federal and Confederate forces in southern Pannseylvania and that Jeb Stuarts cavalry had been spotted near Harrisburg on June 30th. The Battle of Gettysburg didn’t get the big build up as it took awhile to get information in those days! :-)
