MEDIA RELEASE

Date: July 15, 2008 Release: Immediate

Contact: Bill Clifford, Deputy Fire Marshal / Valley

An unapproved un-extinguished recreational fire is the cause of the Valley View fire started last Thursday, July 10th that destroyed eleven homes, five shops and five sheds. Homeowner Tracy Berg supervised a recreational fire Monday evening in an adjacent lot to their property located at 1825 S Eastern road within the jurisdiction of County Fire District 8 and did not properly extinguish the fire when they were finished.

On the day of the Valley View fire, a Red Flag warning was issued for County from noon until 10:00pm for high wind and low humidity. Gusty winds reignited the recreational fire which spread to the forested area. Valley Fire Department responded in the area of Moreland and Eastern roads for a brush fire at 3:17pm. When crews arrived on scene the fire was already moving east and additional resources were requested to respond. Wind gusts continued to quickly spread the fire up and over the ridge evacuating homeowners in its path.

The cost of firefighting and property damage is ongoing and has yet to be determined.
