Modifying a definition doesn’t change reality……

Political correctness has surfaced in the crafting of the ballot language of Referendum 74.   A Thurston County Superior court judge ruled yesterday that Referendum 74 proponents, seeking to overturn the new Washington State law legalizing gay marriage, may contain the phrase “redefine marriage” if it gets to the November ballot.   Never mind that the new law does exactly that.   It redefines marriage, changing what had been a settled definition for thousands of years.   Ah, but you can’t say that in so many words to the voters.

Judge Thomas McPhee issued his politically correct decision.    He caved into pressure from gay marriage supporters who understandably didn’t like that reference to redefining marriage to allow same-sex couples to marry.    They want us all to just accept their claim that the institution of marriage really isn’t being changed by this new state law.   It is the same old definition, but it’s merely being applied a broader range of people, that’s all.   It’s all about the same kinds of relationships.   That is certainly not true, but it works for that special interest group.   A rose by any other name is still a rose, isn’t it?

With acceptable language now established for the referendum, Preserve Marriage Washington may start circulating petitions to collect about 121-thousand valid voter signatures by June 6th.   While the ballot title language apparently must meet the politically correct standard, I think voters know that signing that petition is about retaining the traditional definition of marriage, and aims to defeat its demise.   The state law may rewrite the language, but it does not change reality.  perhaps voters will remind the legislature about that in November.
