The sharks smell blood………
I’m Mike Fitzsimmons with commentary on 920-KXLY…….
It looks like the left has national radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh right where they want him. He has long been a prized target. Not only has Limbaugh commanded for years, a weekly audience equal to all three major TV news networks combined, which the left simply cannot destroy, but he has long used his radio show to sharply criticize left-wing ideology, especially when it is extreme. He has many times exposed the mainstream media’s liberal bias, mistruths and outright lies and distortions. They resent it and they have been waiting for him to make a mistake so that they could pounce.
Now it appears that Limbaugh has at last given the left that opportunity and they’re making the most of it. Last week Rush Limbaugh called Georgetown University of law student, Sandra Fluke, a “slut” and a “prostitute.” Simply put, there is no justification for what Limbaugh said. It was inappropriate. He apologized for his comments, but “words”, as Limbaugh himself has often said on his show and in his writings, “have consequences”, and he is now experiencing the meaning of that admonition. To date the Rush Limbaugh Show has seen the loss of about a dozen major national sponsors. Smelling blood, left-wing bloggers and some in the mainstream media are calling for a boycott of the Limbaugh show.
I have no quarrel with taking lawful action in protest of Limbaugh’s comments, but what about a little fairness and balance here? It was less than a year ago when MSNBC yacker Ed Schultz called conservative radio talk host Laura Ingraham a “slut”. Any media backlash? No. Less than a year ago HBO’s frequently vulgar talk host Bill Maher used a shocking, disgusting, sexually demeaning term I can’t legally utter on the radio, in reference to Sarah Palin. Was a boycott of HBO sponsors organized? No. Did the liberal media express outrage? Not at all. This is what is called selective outrage. This tempest over Rush Limbaugh’s inappropriate remarks is about payback more than it is about righteous indignation. Limbaugh should have been more cautious. The playing field is never even.
