Speak boldly and carry a twig………

I’m Mike Fitzsimmons with commentary on 920-KXLY…….

President Barack Obama insists he will not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear bomb.   The President says such a development would trigger an arms race that would spread throughout the middle east.   He’s right about that, but I don’t think he would select a military strike to prevent that outcome, despite his tough talk.     Obama told he Atlantic in a recent interview that he will stand by Israel even though he will try to persuade Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to strike Iran’s nuclear complexes when the two leaders talk today.

The President claims that he has warned Iran against acquiring a nuclear weapon.   He insists he wasn’t bluffing when told Iran that a military strike is an option.   He may have been talking about Israel taking such an action, but I don’t think Iran believes the United States will initiate an attack on its nuclear facilities, and I don’t either.    President Obama says the Israeli government recognizes that, as President of the United States, he doesn’t bluff.   That ’s true, but Israel also knows that this president’s support is inconsistent at best.   It runs hot and cold and cannot be relied upon the way Israel could rely on past presidents.

President Obama insists that when the United States says it is unacceptable for Iran to have a nuclear weapon, we mean what we say.   I’m sure that’s accurate but should push come to shove, would Barack Obama commit military assets?   I don’t think so.   In my judgment, the president has a convenient out.   Let Israel do it.   They have the most to lose and they’ll have to take the heat while Obama has the luxury of plausible deniability.   The President can say “we tried to talk them out of it.   We wanted to handle this diplomatically…to negotiate a de-escalation of Iran’s nuclear weapons, but Israel just got too anxious.”    How convenient.   Tough talk in an election year with little risk.   It works for Barack Obama.
