Forfeiture of conviction is no virtue………

I’m Mike Fitzsimmons with commentary on 920-KXLY…….

The New Jersey Assembly passed a bill yesterday making same-sex marriages legal in the Garden State, but expect a veto by Governor Chris Christie. Christie opposes gay marriage had promised “very swift action” if the bill reached his desk.   Governor Christie wants gay marriage put to a popular vote.
Washington Governor Chris Gregoire says she wrote to Governor Christie about a month ago offering to talk with him about gay marriage.   He has not responded.  Why should he?  Aside from acknowledging her letter, New Jersey’s governor will learn nothing valuable from Governor Gregoire.   He thinks the people should decide this controversial matter.   Gregoire didn’t ask you.

Governor Gregoire says she told Christie in her letter that on this issue, she has been on a personal journey because while she is a governor and she is also a Catholic.   As a Catholic, Governor Gregoire is presumed to profess a specific morality that is central to her faith community.   Same sex marriage has no place in that morality.   The Catholic church cannot and does not recognize same sex marriage.  The Governor clearly suppressed that faith tenant, choosing instead to cherry pick her core Catholic convictions.   She took a secular course, driven more by political allegiances than by the teachings of her church.
She is what is commonly called an ala-carte Catholic.   She embraces what she agrees with, (and that includes the politically expedient), but disregards the rest.

Politically, there is no apparent consequence for this choice.  Public opinion is split on gay marriage.   God only knows whether there will be a final consequence.   Gregoire joins a prominent list of self-described Catholic politicians who traverse outside the tenants of their faith.   Oddly, this list is dominated by Democrats.   Nancy Pelosi, Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Patty Murray and Senator Maria Cantwell are among the members of this bunch.   Former Speaker Pelosi has already been warned personally by no less than the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Benedict the Sixteenth.    As a Catholic, Governor Gregoire is at odds with her church.   I pray she one day reconciles.
